Qaka Mud Car Project

Port St Johns, Transkei, Eastern Cape Province

Young men in Port St Johns have been handcrafting cars out of river clay for over 30 years. They possess great modelling skills using very basic tools and this knowledge is passed on from generation to generation.

The cars are fragile as they have not been fired and a robust package was developed in order to prevent the cars from being damaged. Due to the design of the package, it became a part of the overall product and served as a display stand.

The CSIR have supported the Qaka Mud Car Project making use of Poverty Alleviation Funds to improve the ability of this project to become self-sustaining.
