Art Workshop in Gugulethu for Vulnerable Children

Ikamva Labantu, Gugulethu

In 2008 Leonard Shapiro met Italian artist Andrea Mariconti while in Milan and discussed the idea of holding an art workshop for vulnerable children in Cape Town, South Africa. A three day art workshop was organised by Shapiro and took place in 2009 at Ikamva Labantu's Rainbow Centre in Gugulethu, with Mariconti facilitating the workshop. Nineteen children participated in the workshop.

After the workshop, 38 of the children's artworks were exhibited at the Bell Roberts Gallery in Woodstock. The artworks were priced at R800 each. All of the artworks were sold, raising R30 400 for the Rainbow Centre. Mariconti exhibited his own artworks at the same exhibition.
